The Winter Blues and Blacks

During the winter months  when weddings slow down , I like to keep up with my studio work.  I had the pleasure of working  with a beautiful young lady. Shooting wedding and white wedding dresses I want to shot some low key (dark) images. The models name is Tiffany, what a sweet young lady. I hope to work with her again in the spring.

I love the work of George Hurrell, I know I’ll never be a ” George Hurrell,” but it sure is fun trying.  Mr. Hurrell would say either you have it or you don’t.  The picture of Tiffany on the couch was my first attempt.  In the next few months I hope to have some more skill building shoots.

Fall colors I enjoy photographing families, it seems like I don’t do many of them. This last weekend I had the pleasure of working with a wonderful (and silly) family. I tried some new lighting , and you would never be able to tell that is was an overcast day.

Sir Isaac Amadeus Blackmore (Clay Blackmore)

Clay Blackmore with Jerry Misiewicz

I have learn a lot from Monty Zucker and Clay Blackmore

Yesterday, I went to Kansa City for a class by Clay Blackmore. Who is Clay, you may ask? I enjoy many things in life some of which are family, my faith, music, math, and history just to name few. What does this have to do with Clay Blackmore?

Clay is one of the wedding photographers that you can point to and say that he bridged “old school” to “new school,”  just as Mozart bridged the “old school” composers like Haydn to “new school” composers like Beethoven. Beethoven was on his way to study with Mozart when Mozart passed away before Beethoven arrived, so Beethoven did the next best thing and studied with Haydn.

Clay has studied under some great old school photographers like Monte Zucker, Don Blair, Rocky Gunn, Joe Zeltsman. I’ve studied them as well, but only in books and tapes which are not the same as in person.  Sir Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants.” I look at Clay like this; he stands on the shoulders of these Titans.  Most of these Titans were from the film era, which means they had to get in the camera on the front end because there was no Photoshop.

I know that posing and lighting are evil words to many, but their work is beautiful; men look like men and women look like women.  Those old school guys had a plan and tons of talent. (Yes, I said guys. During this era the cameras and equipment were heavy and most ladies could not carry the massive amount of equipment.)  I hate to say it was a small group of about thirty at Clay’s class.

I’ve been to Clay’s classes  before, but I still learned some cool stuff.  I even won some software and music.

Learning and keeping up to date is an ongoing task , I know if you stay in one place to long you get passes by.  Please look for me updated site and more weddings getting posted.

There does the time go?

I’m sorry for not posting much, but I’ve need busy. I was about to be laid off from my day job (this the job the pays the bills) before I found a new one.
It’s funny for a number of reasons: (1) I never missed a day of work during the transition. (2) I’m making more than I was at my old job (3) I honestly feel I dodged a bullet and landed in a bed of roses. (4) I feel guilty for for things turning out so well. (5) I’ve always had a love of God, and have knowed he is in charge but I think this was the first time I let him.

Also, I’ve been shooting weddings, seniors, and went to see David Ziser again.
I’m still planing to redo my Looking Glass site and Omaha wedding Photographer site, I’m also doing more with videos.

I have two more weeks of weddings, than I hope to get to the site and posting on the blog.

Trash the dress meets Sports Illustrated Bridal issue in Omaha

Trash The Dress

Trash The Dress

Well I  finally did a trash the dress session.  It was really more  like trash the dress meets Sports Illustrated Bridal issue. Which I’m sure would be a big seller. I have a pool and been trying to do this for over a year now. What was nice is the control of the light that I was able to implement.   I loved it!

The brides wedding it not until September and this was  a old dress that she had and wanted to have some fun with. I’m not sure who had more fun the bride or myself. After her wedding I’ll post some more from this.

I think another reason that I liked this was, we did not trash the dress as in it needs to be hand washed but that it. I know I’m a softie, but the wedding dress something special and deserves more respect than rolling in the mud and I’ve see some were they set it on fire.

I do hope to do some more Sports Illustrated Bridal issues.

Afterglow Pictures in omaha

Beautiful wedding sunset in Omaha

Beautiful wedding sunset in Omaha

Omaha wedding Sunset
Afterglow pictures

I’ve had this idea for some time now, but this was the first time I shot one. If the reception location is not ideal or if on the wedding day the couple is running behind, would it be nice to take some sunset wedding picture the day after the wedding? The groom still has the tux and the bride is as beautiful as ever.

Afterglow pictures are photographs of the couple taken the day following the wedding day from 10 minutes before to 10 minutes after sunset. These images are ideal for romance images of the couple and of the bride alone. They also make great thank you cards.

There are many beautiful sunset locations in and around the Omaha area. I’ll be adding this as an add-on to my wedding packages. To encourage couples to take advantage of this, I’ll be offering these free for anyone booking this year and only fifty dollars extra for anyone booking next year.

These were taken on a Sunday evening/night and the couple made a small investment of twenty minutes for memories that will last a life time. If you have ANY questions please fill free to call, email or skype me, I look forward to hearing from you.

Just outside of Omaha

I love this job

Man want a day, It was VERY warm when we took these images at Mahoney State Park.  She was great, and I’m happy with the images. It was overcast so I didn’t get the blue sky I was looking for, but you get what you get.  All in all it took about an hour for the whole shoot.  Again I just LOVE bridals, you can do evrything from playful to sexy and have fun doing it.
